How to find a fragrance online that actually suits you
Choosing a fragrance online feels like guesswork: you see names, note lists and photos, but you can't smell anything. This article shows you how to arrive at a fragrance that suits you anyway, and what part our fragrance advisor Flora plays in that.
The real problem with buying fragrance online
In a shop it's quick: spray, wait a moment, decide. Online that moment is missing. What you get instead are product photos, names and note lists, and from those you're meant to imagine a smell.
There's a second problem. Most people know what they like, but not what it's called. They say "warm", "like clean laundry", "not too sweet" or "something with vanilla, but nothing kitsch". In a shop with filters by fragrance family that doesn't get you far, because filters demand the technical terms you'd have to learn first.
The outcome is familiar: you buy nothing, or you buy on a hunch and never wear it.
What Flora does
Flora is a fragrance advisor you write to like you would in a normal conversation. She knows more than 500 ÉCLAT creations of our own, along with their notes, fragrance families and product data.
You describe it in your own words
You don't need any technical terms. "Something cosy for autumn evenings, with vanilla but not sugary sweet" is plenty. Flora translates that into notes and tells you how she has understood your description.
The more specific you are, the better her recommendation. It helps most when you say what you don't want. A "nothing aquatic, please" narrows the field more than three wishes do.
Flora asks
She doesn't recommend straight away. First she asks who the fragrance is for, what occasion you have in mind or how intense it should be. That's the difference from a filter: a consultation responds to what you say.
You get two or three suggestions, with reasons
Flora won't list twenty products. She gives you a few and explains how they differ. For each one you see the notes with their weighting, the pyramid of top, heart and base notes, suitable seasons, and values for longevity and sillage.
And if something doesn't fit, just say so. "Too sweet", "too heavy", "without leather" is enough and she adjusts the selection. This adjusting is what leads to the best results, because it shows Flora where the edge of your taste lies.
Already have a list of notes? Even better
Some people know exactly what they're after and have a full pyramid in mind or in front of them. You can paste that list straight into the chat: top notes, heart notes, base notes.
Flora matches it against our collection and shows you the creations that come closest to your profile, including where they differ. This is the fastest route to a match, because Flora works with concrete notes from the start rather than with descriptions.
Why Flora only knows ÉCLAT fragrances
Flora advises exclusively on our own creations. She gives no information about other brands' fragrances and makes no comparisons.
There's a practical reason for this: a recommendation is only as good as the data behind it. For every ÉCLAT creation the notes, fragrance family and character are on file, composed in our own manufactory in Germany. On that basis Flora can work reliably.
For you that means: talk to her about notes, occasions and moods rather than about other brands. If you have a fragrance in mind, describe what you like about it. Is it sweet or dry? What do you smell in the first moment, what's left by the evening? She'll turn that into a recommendation.
From suggestion to sample: testing fragrance without the risk
A recommendation isn't a decision yet. That's why the consultation doesn't end at the 55 ml bottle, but at trying things out.
Flora puts together a personal discovery set with 8 fragrances, matching the direction the two of you worked out. You smell them at home, wear them through a whole day and only then notice how a fragrance develops on your skin. Longevity and intensity always depend on your skin, the season and how much you apply.
That's the point: you don't have to guess online. You test first and decide afterwards. And if something still isn't right, our 30-day money-back guarantee applies.
How to get the most out of the consultation
Three things make the biggest difference.
Write in detail. A single word like "autumn" leaves far too much open. A sentence like "Warm and woody for cool evenings, nothing aquatic and not too heavy" takes Flora straight to the right area.
Name what's off the table. What you rule out is often more useful for a recommendation than what you wish for.
Stay in the conversation. The first answer is a suggestion, not a verdict. Tell Flora what doesn't work about it, and do mention the fragrances you already own so she doesn't suggest them twice.
In short
Flora doesn't solve the problem of buying fragrance online by sparing you the smelling. She solves it by getting you quickly to the few creations worth smelling. The rest is a sample and a day of wearing it.
The best way to see it is to try: describe in one sentence how your next fragrance should smell.
